Episode: 12 Maia Kamil
Maia welcomed us into her home in Winston Salem, NC on a sunny morning. The space is carefully decorated with heirlooms reflecting her rich connection to family — particularly to her recently late grandmother. The aged wood floors and her open dining room seemed to be an additional player, especially as she led a trio of singers and players. For her first two songs, she’s accompanied by Kevin Beck, Noah Elliott, and Tori Elliot.
Her voice commands attention — gentle and self-assured. She talked candidly about her transition to full-time music and the way she seeks to honor her heritage in her artwork. After the session she found time to squeeze in a trip to a Japanese noodle house with the brothers before her show that evening.
